We see bar codes on every product we buy, and they are scanned to assist in purchasing these items. However, most of us do not know what these codes stand for. Well, there are some things you can do to help you understand what they mean. To begin with, look at the digits under the bar code. The digit on the far left tells you the type of bar code. For instance, the number 3 is a coupon. The first 5 digits tell you the manufacture of the product, and each manufacturer has a different combination of digits. The second set of digits tells you the product, and again, each has its own set. Products of different sizes will have different sets of numbers here. The last number on the bar code is used by the store to verify the item and price of the product. Every bar code has a series of 5 skinny lines in the center, and two black lines that extend in between the actual digits. Reading bar codes can be quite a challenge, and will take lots of time to figure out how. One you have the language down, however, reading various bar codes is quite easy.
