Cervical? pain, or a pain in the neck, has various causes. There are disorders, diseases, ad viruses that all could cause this pain. Some common conditions include: whiplash, a pinched nerve, or a herniated disc. A virus infection in the throat can cause the lymph glands to swell and create neck pain. Rare infections, such as tuberculosis and osteomyelitis (a bone infection of the neck) could also cause this pain. Meningitis is another infection, but this usually brings with it stiffness in the neck. There are also muscle-affecting conditions that cause this cervical pain. These can include polymyalgia rheumatica and fibromyalgia. High contact sports are a big risk factor for having neck pain. Car accidents tend to cause this pain as well. Prevention is as simple as wearing a neck brace, and there are exercises that will help you strengthen your neck muscles to prevent these injuries. There is treatment for your neck pain which will vary with the cause. Some common treatments include: cold or hot applications (or a combination of the two), simple rest, physical therapy, muscle relaxers, and local injections of cortisone or anesthetics. There are some home remedies as well, such as pain relief exercises and stretches, and products such as neck pillows ad hot pads. Acupuncture is another treatment, though it is less common.
